Where to Locate the Eye Wash Station
It is important that your entire team knows where the eye wash station is located, and that it is in a good location. Imagine something is in your eye, you will need to quickly be able to find the eye wash station with muscle memory of where it is. It is a good idea to also have trainings for employees when they don’t have something in their eye, so they know what to do. Some laboratories practice this exercise blindfolded, as that is what you will feel if your eye has a contaminant in it.
-Never store anything in front of the eye wash station
-Centrally locate in the laboratory
Osha’s Guidelines on Eye Wash Stations in Laboratories
In summary, OSHA’s policy on eye wash stations states that emergency eyewashes to quickly flush out the eye must be required in any laboratory that could be exposed to injurious corrosive materials. This is defined in the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which was formerly known as the Material Safety Data Sheet. (See excerpt below). For each hazardous chemical that is stored, laboratories must have this SDS.
