What a Reception Desk Needs to Do
Pacific Ergonomics has specified and installed reception desks for offices across San Diego County and nationwide for over 25 years. A reception desk does more than hold a monitor and a phone. It’s the first thing a visitor sees, it needs to support whatever administrative work happens at that desk day to day, and it has to hold up under daily use in a high-traffic spot.
Desk Configurations and Sizing
Reception desks come in a few standard shapes: straight-front, L-shaped, and U-shaped, each suited to different lobby sizes and receptionist workflows. A smaller entryway can work with a compact desk in the 48 to 60 inch range, while larger lobbies typically call for an L-shaped or U-shaped desk starting around 72 inches. Measuring the actual space before selecting a configuration avoids a desk that’s too large for the room or too small for the work being done at it.
ADA Compliance and Accessibility
Reception desks in commercial spaces need an ADA-compliant transaction surface at accessible height, usually paired with the main desk through a lower return section. This isn’t optional in most commercial buildings, and it’s one of the first things we check during space planning.
Cable Management and Technology
A reception desk usually needs to support a computer, a phone system, and sometimes a card reader or visitor check-in system, all without a tangle of visible cords. Built-in grommets and cable channels keep wiring routed through the desk instead of across the floor or the countertop.
Materials and Finishes
Reception desks come in laminate, wood veneer, and glass-top finishes, so the desk can match the rest of your lobby or reception area. Durability matters here more than in most office furniture, since a reception desk sees near-constant use throughout the workday.
Working With Pacific Ergonomics
We handle space planning, configuration, and installation for reception desks as part of the same project, so ADA compliance, sizing, and finish all get planned together rather than fixed after the fact. Request a consultation to talk through your lobby and what fits your space.
