How to Select the Right Laboratory Stool

#1. Identify the application
When choosing a laboratory stool, one must consider whether it is going to be occupied by a single individual or if the chair will be moved to multiple different places. This will significantly influence the type of stool recommended. While some models are more suitable for prolonged use, others are more suited for quick repositioning and mobility.

#2. Task Analysis

-Depending on the kind of job a lab technician is undertaking, the ideal lab stool for them may differ; for instance, whether they are leaning in towards a microscope, pipetting, or stirring fluids.

#3. Are there any special lab stool requirements
-Do you need a clean room stool in San Diego?
–Is there a specific ISO Clean room rating that is needed (ISO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8?)
-Is ESD needed on the stool?

#4. Cleanability and Chemicals
Are the lab conditions such that chemical spills on the stools could occur? If so, what procedures are in place for disinfecting the stools? Additionally, what specific chemicals are utilized for cleaning which will factor in the chose of material that is recommended for your lab.

#5. How many different areas will a person be sitting for four hours or more in the stool?
-Ergonomic adjustability and obtaining the proper size stool are paramount for such uses. Should an employee be sitting on the stool for 15 minutes at a time, then that would call for a different application compared to an 8 hour workday.

#6. Height of the Bench
Selecting the correct stool for a workbench is crucial; it is essential to know the exact bench height the user will be operating at. Different sizes of cylinders and ranges must be taken into consideration for varying heights. If the bench is electric height adjustable, further criteria must be considered for the optimal stool choice.

#7. Will the stools be moved from a chair height to a bench height, or will they serve one function?
-There are special solutions that can accommodate this need. Most stools have specific height ranges and this has to match the need of the task and the height of the bench.

#8. Do you want color coding to maintain inventory in specific labs?

-Brightly hued lab stools are increasingly becoming popular in laboratory settings, allowing for easy identification of stools allocated to particular labs, such as clean rooms, while adding an attractive visual element and uplifting the morale of laboratory personnel.

#9. Do you have some individuals on the team that weight more than 300lbs, are tall, or very petite and work in the same lab stool all day?

Does your lab personnel have a weight exceeding 350lbs? To ensure longevity of the lab stool, you may want to select one that is of a similar design, but with a sturdier base designed for heavier loads.

#10. What will your foot support solution be?
-Most foot rings on lab stools are small as the foot ring compresses the back of the leg. There are much better options available to keep your employees comfortable.

-Manufactures have different warranties for multi-shift stools versus single shift. This is important to know for warranty reasons, but also to implement the right lab stool for the task.

#12. Will the lab tech be working in a Fume hood and is it height adjustable?
-Fume hoods vary drastically, and depending on the task there are specific fume hood lab stools that are best suited.
